January 31 anniversary
Today is the anniversary of my mother's death It's hard to believe it's only been ONE year. It feels like a lifetime. I keep thinking I will get some 'sign' from her, or some sort of ghostly visit, or some sort of confirmation that her spirit still exists 'out there'. I know she's still alive in my heart. She can't help but be, I am her daughter. I am like her in ways I probably don't even understand yet. But I still long for some kind of spiritual affirmation that she's around, maybe even dropping by now and then to see how her grandkids are doing. How soul soothing that would be, a real knowing that SHE is still SOMEWHERE, not just gone and buried to rot in the frozen ground, like she always claimed to believe.
I miss her NOW in ways I couldn't have imagined a year ago. Every new mom needs her own mom around, that's the way it's 'supposed' to be.
I thought that in tribute to my mom, I'd share one of my favourite memories of her. ..... .... after thinking long and hard, however, it's just too hard to choose ONE. SO instead I thought I'd share something I really respect about my mother. Though her own childhood was certainly difficult, and definately traumatic, she wanted to make 'damn sure' that my brother & I had a better childhood than she did. For years, she was a single mom, not even a high school diploma, run-away husband, 2 small kids, one multiply handicapped (my Bro, Andrew) and this was back in the early 70's..not alot of social programs & supports back then, not in Nebraska, anyways. PLUS, this being the u.s.a., we had no medical insurance, so when my brother needed medical attention, which happend frequently, hospitals would try to refuse admittance &/or treatment..but only over my mom's 'dead body' (used to be a favourite saying of hers...yeah, you'll get your way...'over my dead body')
Now, being a mom of 2 small ones myself, I can understand how she had the strength to do it. She was a mommy-bear she HAD to look after her cubs. But, She had no clue what to do with a handicapped child..she had to learn and fight for him. So when I have bad days as a mom, I think of the strength she had to have to keep going and to raise us, with so much going against her and little support around (Her good friend Joan was her main support and my 'other mother' whom I still love, cherish and keep contact with) (wave to Joan
I remember, even as a small child, she would always give my brother & I choices. She felt it was important that we were 'heard', that we had a voice that mattered. Giving us choices helped us feel important. She wanted to be sure that we felt we were 'heard' since she felt she wasn't in her childhood. So even in a raging tantrum at a store, she'd say, it's Okay to be mad, but you still aren't going to get that toy. So, I think one of the things I value most , that my mom taught me, was to treat my children as real little people, with their own emotions, perspectives, feelings, attitudes, wants, dislikes, moods, the whole bit. They are THEIR own person, I can't 'make' them into anything....know what I'm trying to say? I value that my mother allowed me to be me, to express myself. She never 'shh'ed' me out of embarassment ...she'd shh me in a library, or church or what not, but, not because I was 'upsetting' folks around me. She let me be me. I love her for that, and my kids will hopefully love me for that too.
AND if she can cross into cyber-space at all: Mom, I miss you ....feel free to come visit me ANYTIME!!
January 29 "Ode to a Missing Boot"...or...."The Misadventures of A"Oh BOOT
where art thou now?
washed ashore?
perhaps nestled against a tree bough?
or perchance sucked thru the storm drain?
Oh BOOT black as night,
It's just not the same,
without the 'right'.
I saw you float out of sight
and wished that I had the foresight
to have thrown you with more might.
ok, so that was my "Ode to a Missing Boot"
How did I lose my boot? my left boot?
THIS is definately a misadventure of Amy
So today I had some FREE TIME again
We had like, NO, money left, just change. So I hopped on the bus with my $2.50
and headed for the nearest skytrain station. I hadn't ridden the skytrain's new Millenium Line. So I decided, for some alone time, and because it was a rainy sunday afternoon, I'd check out the new line, with my headphones...just like I used to commute, back in the 'single' days.
I got a front 'driver's seat' on a new coach. For those readers unfamilliar with Vancouver's Skytrain, it is a transportation marvel! It's all (well, nearly all) above ground, run by electro-magnets and FULLY automated, so there are NO train drivers aboard. That part of my adventure was fine. I rode thru the WHOLE city, aside from the crowds near ChinaTown for the New Years Festivals, the train was pretty quiet. I returned to 'my' skytrain station and decided to walk home. It was pissing rain, but I had NO idea when the next bus would come, AND it was a 'sunday' schedule, so I thought, how bad could it be... I've gotten rain-sodden wet before, no biggy. So I started walking home.
I decided to explore and take the 'green way' home. Near our home is a wide ravine and a creek, it's a nice green belt, and from the driving past on the road, I'd knew there was a trail down there that parralled the creek. I'd never explored there before (it's not exactly stroller friendly). However, I started my hike along the creek from the opposite end that I pass by with the car...so I had to navigate my way to find the trail head. I found the trail and started hiking upstream. It was pretty wet...hmmm...actually it's pretty muddy, but Ah well...I'm a mtn. biker,, I'm used to a bit o mud...
I keep following the trail, I get about halfway up the ravine, when the trail turns, and actually 'crosses' the creek. Well, silly me, since it's been raining non-stop here since December...the 'creek' was a bit on the wide side....and a bit on the deep side, and a bit on the RUSHing WHITEWATER side.
It was a bloody RAGING creek...ok raging is a bit of embellishment..but it was white water and moving very fast....fast enough to loose a boot.
So my choice was, to try to cross the creek...or go back
NEVER GO BACK !!
so
I had to cross
this was the best place to cross..beleive me I did check out alternatives..
I hopped across on a couple large boulders sticking just out of the water..but I still had 2/3 rds still to cross, and the deepest part yet to come.
I decided I'd do what any logical adventurer would do.
I take off my boots and socks..I'd wade thru barefoot...
I've done that lots of times...no biggy
The water was at least knee deep and the stones underneath very slippery with algea. So I decided to make things simpler by tossing my boots to the other side so I could use both hands to balance.
Only problem was, the last boot, ...my left boot...didn't QUITE make it across, and quickly got caught in the current. I tried to lunge after it, but the water REALLY was moving fast.
So I had to just stand there , numb to the knees, and watch my beatiful black winter boot float downstream.......
sigh.......
I got to the other side
paid my respects to my lost boot, now downstream somewhere, already out of sight,
picked up the remaining boot and socks (least both of those made it over.....they are NICE socks!)
I decided, since my feet were numb and dirty anyways, I'd continue on barefoot.
I made it 3/4ths up the ravine now, but the trail is now trampled bramble vines and though my feet are numb, I could still feel the thorns.
So I put my nice socks over wet muddy feet, and put on my remaining boot and sort hopped thru along the bramble trail.
That was quickly tiring so when I spotted another trail, I took it.
This trail went straight up the side of the ravine, which was lined with backyards.
Often, though, there will be trail access between houses lining a green space, so I thought this might be one of them.
I pulled myself up the trail and into someones back yard
I refused to go back DOWN to the bramble trail and I was quite close to home now.
So I went into 'spy' mode. I snuck thru the backyard, around the pool, past the shed, along the side of the house and thru their gate, then RAN thru the front yard..one boot on....one boot missing.
I got to our sidewalk and only had a block left til home.
I hobbled along in soaking wet sock foot, and mudcoated soaked blackboot
I couldn't help but laugh at myself
Did I mention that it was pissing rain this whole time too????
I finally made it home...whew....
Gary asked...where's your shoe?
January 27 What's up with MSN?Not sure what's going on, but MSN has changed it's window panels and such and it's totally thrown me off
I mean, what's with the new photo album setup? and my personal profile? that's changed too
Is it just me???
MSN is messin with me... January 25 Where in the world was Amy?

maplewood morningThis morning, though the rain was forcast, again, suprise, suprise...the sun was actually shining this morning.
I was itchin' to get out and take the kids somewhere, to take advantage of the few dry hours we weren't supposed to get.
I found a partner in crime, and Edie & I met up at Maplewood Farm, at opening.
There were no school groups, only a few moms, with toddlers, like us.
Eryn LOVED chasing the ducks and chickens, and the poor albino peacock. She loved ALL the animals.
She was impressed with the cows, and goats. She was fearless climbing in amongst the billy goats, up the rocks, no problem.
At one point I saw her grab a hand full of goat poop (nice little round balls and all). As I bent over to grab her hand to shake out the goat poop, I got goat snot in my face, the bloody thing snorted at me, right in the face, BLEECH
about as bad as the goat poop.
We all had a thorough hand washing after that.
I am always impressed by Maplewood Farm, it's so clean, for a farm. Especially with the amount of fowl they have.
Here's a few photo's from our morning.
After and hour and 1/2 it finally began to rain, which was good timing cause they were getting run-down after an hour. 'Cpet maybe Isabella, cause whenever Edie put her down, she'd just stand there, rooted in the ground. Least she didn't get dirty. Eryn was soaked and muddy when we left.
She had a nice 3 hour nap when we got home :)
Aiden was great n the backpack, again. He didn't once complain, just shrieked in excitement a few times.
Heeeere's the pic's January 24 Ode to the Sun...WOW
I almost found myself involuntarily hissing when I opened the window shades this morning !!! It was the SUN !!!
WOW the sun was so bright! It was kind of the sensation of 'DONT LOOK AT THE LIGHT, but you can't help yourself, but to look at the light. know what I mean? Too bad Sirius sat on my sunglasses, and broke them , that was back the beginning of December....haven't needed them since, but...they woulda' been nice today! I really haven't done my 'laugh lines' any good today, with all the squinting I did
Today's busy rigamarole included:
a couple appt.s today.
One was with the BCAA car-seat clinic. After getting the kids new car-seats over the holidays, I wanted to be sure we had them installed properly. One less thing to be anxiety-ridden about. It's such a great service, and a good piece of mind.
After the 'running around' was done, we still had a good 2 hours of daylight left. So I packed up the kids & dog, and we went for a walk.
We headed down to our local playground. Eryn met a new friend to play with there, just 2 weeks older than her. She is really good on the playground now. She can sit in the 'big' swing, she can even climb UP the slide. Aiden had his first go in the infant swing. He held on tight, real well.
I think I probably got the most excercise though, between pushing the 2 of them there & back (up our steep hill) and chasing after Eryn, then chacking in with Aiden, who's in the stroller, then throwing the ball for the dog, then chasing after Eryn, checking on Aiden, throw the ball for Sirius. The other mom there was having a good chuckle at me. And then, she told me, she was trying to imagine herself with a young one like Aiden as well...
It's going to keep me active THAT's for sure ;)
All in all, very busy day, but VERY glad that we all got a walk in the fresh air & sunshine.
I just wished I'd brought the camera, cause the kids cheeks were so beautifully rosey!
British Columbia is the most beautiful place on earth ,when the sun is shining!
When it's not, and it's raining, it becomes the wettest place on earth.
HAHAHA
I love the SUN
I saw a huge rhodadendron bush just loaded with brilliant pink flowers...spring will be right around the corner.
I can't wait to do more hiking! Aiden loves the big back-pack. He's so easy to carry in that. Eryn can still fit into it too, but we only have one.
Will be looking forward to lots more of that come spring.
January 23 An Ode to Mtn. Biking...Why I LOVE mtn. biking.
I haven't been on a mtn. bike since August 2003, when I found out I was 3 months pregnant with Eryn.
I really miss it
The only sport that is more pleasurable than downhill mtn. biking, would be horseback riding. Both have the same sort of inherent dangers, that's part of the appeal. They are both expensive, though horseback riding still wins that contest hands down.
I love mtn. biking because it's a thrilling escape. When I'm riding my bike down the trails of the NorthShore, I have to be watching where I'm going, what's ahead, my balance, the terrain, my speed, my gears etc.... There are SO many things going on in my brain at once, that I couldn't possibly be distracted by the trials and tribulations of the day-to-day-grind. PLUS, I'm out there in the fresh air, the gorgeous mountains, learning the trails and terrain of the mountain intimately (sometimes too intimately..hehe) It requires a good amount of indurance. HA you may think, you're going downhill..how could you need indurance.
HA I say, just try it once and you'll see for yourself. When I'm hitting the trails, on a good day, I feel one with my bike, letting gravity pull me down the slope of the mountian, like the water in the mountian stream. It's a very zen-like feeling, when it all comes together smoothly.
Then , there are all the other times, when the mtn. gets teh better of me, and I end the day with a couple charlie horses on my legs, and a few miscellaneous scratches & bruises. It is a sport that will ALWAYS be challenging, just depends on the trails you decide to ride.
Some of the nicest most genuine people I've ever met, have been freeriders. The mtn. bike 'sub-culture' we were privy to when riding, was awesome. We had such memorable times, exploring new trails, getting lost, getting found, getting stuck, getting broke down. And at the end of the day, relaxin, drinkin' & smokin'. I remember those weekends FULL of mtn. biking, were the most satisfying weekends I ever had. We'd be filthy dirty, muddy, cold & wet or sweaty & soaked (depended on the weather, we rode year-round) then end the day satisfactorily exhausted.
Those were all pre-kid weekends.
One day we will ahve some semblence of that back, and eventually, we hope to be able to enjoy it together as a family. How awesome will that be?
WE are focused on trying to get new bikes. We made the mistake of upgrading our bikes every year..then when Gary lost his job, we weren't able to get new ones...ever since... snif...boo hooo
ONE DAY though, we will have bikes again. I was just really missing mtn. biking today. We live at the bast of a mtn. and today I saw some guys riding past on their 'big bikes' so I was having 'pangs' of longing...
hence my ..ode to mtn. biking..
here's some photo's of the bikes I've owned.
plus a couple photo's of me in action. BIG sistersWe have learned an important lesson in parenting. We already knew that our kids will imitate whatever we do..that's how they learn.
This has never been brought home more clearly and LOUDLY than it was this weekend.
Much of this I blame on Gary....
First of all
he turned the baby monitor OFF (more on this later)
BUT
when we heard loud crying, we knew something was UP
We opened the kids bedroom door (they had been napping), to find that Eryn had climbed into Aiden's crib (she's unstoppable) and was playing with him the way Daddy plays with her when he gets home from work. Namely, she was trying to lift Aiden up over her shoulder and fell over backward in his crib, with him, in the course of it.
Gary was VERY upset to say the least. Poor Aiden was no worse for wear, just red faced from crying and probably one more bruise to add to his crown.
Here's where I can say I blame Gary, cause, he turned the baby monitor off without telling me(something I never do)
AND
because he wrestles with Eryn, as she was trying to do to Aiden.
SO, probably no more of that, until she understands that she can't body-slam her brother..at least not til he's 6 (you know what I mean)
the trials of parenthood...are well underway......
January 20 HALLELUJAH !!!!!woot!! woot !!
sound the trumpets !
release the doves !
send up the balloons !
raise the banners !
Light the fireworks !
break out the champagne !
it's time to CHEER!!!!!!
Aiden sleeps thru the night...we're talking near 12 hours straight!
We thought it was a 'fluke' at first, so we waited a couple nights to be sure...didn't want to get our hopes up...
BUT IT'S TRUE!!!!!
YIPPY SKIPPY
YIPPEE KAIYO KAIYAY!!! (as Dragon would say)
My 'trick' worked and mission is accomplished!
Wanna know what the secret is?
To getting babes to happily sleep 10+hours thru the night????
HAHAHA
Think I'd 'spill the beans' here?????
You know how much money $$$$$ I'm gonna make from this?? !!!!
Know how VALUABLE this is? Know how many folks would give up a baby pinky toe for the 'secret' ?
I'm gonna be RICH!
Aside from blissfully sleeping thru the night FINALLY ( AND with the help of the 'wonder' pills Doc gave me)...my life seems to be transforming. Sleep deprivation wrecks havoc in ways unimaginable!
Aside from that half of the 'day' improving
We've been getting out and about INSPITE of the 'blessed' rain.
Last night, driving home from hanging out with Dave & Ed, there was SO much rain pooled onto all the streets, that even the Big 'Ol Beast of a Bronco with it's big-ass snow tires (yup, I was piloting the 'tank' that night), was hydro-planeing and sending me careening too close to curb-side for comfort.
Not suprising though, since it's been raining EVERYDAY here since Dec 16th of 2005!
I don't care what the bloody 'official' account is, it's rained every bloody day!
In spite of it though, we still gotta get out and about.
We met up with Steph & Lauren at the Library, and got are babes weighed in, at the weekly baby clinic there.(got a shot of Lauren & Steph at the scale)
Aiden is JUST a few ounces shy of 20lbs...had I fed him his lunch first, then weighed him, with the amount he eats, he'd have made 20lbs!
Eryn, looking back at the record books, weighed 20lbs when she was 13 months old. Either baby boys do grow at a different rate than baby girls ..or he's gonna be a big boy...like the Buchanans. My Grandpa & Uncles are all well over 6'4" (I'll have to consult with Uncle Glenn...or.. Uncle Robert could mail in with the 'official' stats.
By this summer or fall I predict that he will catch up to her in clothes size too. That will simplify things too, can't wait!
Actually I can wait...Aiden is growing SO fast..his 'babyhood' is almost over..I'll miss it, he's just 'gold', a perfect baby! sigh... if only toddlerhood and adolescence goes so smoothly...
January 18 A Force To Be Wreckond With..I have said before, many times & in many ways, that my daughter is a force to be wrekond with. First of all, she's an Aries (and while I don't believe in daily astrology, there seems to be vague truths to zodiac 'personalities' and I am definately married to a Libra) So, Aries, being fire signs, are 'hot to handle'
here is a perfect description of my daughter..but it is actually a description of an Aries baby:
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac. It represents birth. He's the infant of the zodiac-the newborn baby-completely absorbed with his own toes and fingers. An infant doesn't care whether or not his parents or the neighbors are sleeping. When he's hungry or wet, he yowls in discomfort. He wants his bottle, and he wants his diaper changed now, and don't be pokey about it. That's all that counts. He wants something. He gets it. Like the infant, Aries is concerned with the world only as it relates to himself. But who could call the small baby truly selfish? He's perfectly willing to lavish his smiles and favors on those who satisfy his demands. It's hard to re¡©sist a baby, because he's so totally unaware that he's causing anyone the slightest inconvenience. So it is with the ram. His innocence hangs over him and mellows his ag¡©gressiveness, like the innocence of the newborn softens his egocentricity. This disarming naivete is also why Aries people are so fearless. The baby fears nothing and no one, until he gets burned. Even then, he'll trustingly try again, when he's forgotten the hurt. There's not a trace of cunning wile in the ram, and he'll remain this way throughout his lifetime; forever believing with all his heart, always falling down and getting up again to try once more. Any doubts he collects along the way are immediately displaced by the next person who's kind to him, just as the baby forgets the pain of the safety pin that accidentally stuck in his leg the next time someone sprinkles the powder.
As well, when we picked the name : Eryn we chose the 'Y' for very good reason. I was aware that Kabalarians, who have a 'home' here in Vancouver, believe there is power in a name, or rather, they believe the power is all in the numbers. Each letter of the alphabet is given a number, and so each name carries with it certain 'energies' lets say. So if you 'feel' more like a 'Samantha', but are stuck with a name like 'Charlotte' then you can see how it affects your life. When we looked up Eryn's name, there was a big difference between spelling it with a 'y' or an 'i'. So even if the Kabalarians are full of crap, what's the harm, but if there is truth in it, then I want to give my kid the best possible name. Gary & I tried lots of friends names in their 'calculator' and we found real truths in their system. Example: I tried my family names. Sharon, was definately a 'Sharon' (my mom) and Andrew (my bro) was definately my Andrew, and so on. I would post their description of 'Eryn' but their website is momentarily down. When it is running again, I will paste it in here. here's a link to their site http://www.kabalarians.com/html/surf-by.htm
I love that my daughter is an Aries, she will probably keep me young too. I am also relieved that Aiden is a Taurus. He is so calm and relaxed 95% of the time. I will endeavor to one day 'blog' a description of my Taurus Baby as well. But, my point here was... Eryn, my 'force to be wreckond with', was everywhere in the 'tots gym' I took the kids to yesterday, at the community centre. She was in everything, under everything, pushing her way infront of kids to get down the slide, to get at whatever. At one point, I had Aiden on one of those baby-bikes. He was perfectly happy. Then Eryn came up and wanted to push him. That would have been fine, except that she has only one speed, FAST. I still managed to snap a quick shot of the 2 of them as she took off. She went so fast, Aiden lost his grip on the wheel, started leaning/falling back and was in danger of sliding off and being run over by his well intentioned sister. The photo is hilarious though, Eryn has such a devilish grin on her face, and Aiden is like: Woah! What's goin' on??? Love that photo!
January 16 Stupid TechnicalitiesOK, so I hear on the radio this morning, that we WON'T make it into the record books, for Most Consecutive Days of Rain...because..and this is so stupid....it did not rain .2cm at a particular plot of land out by the airport, on sunday, where the 'official' data is collected.
SPIT ON THAT!
Yesterday, being Sunday, I was driving from Burnaby to N. Vancouver...also thru sections of vancouver and let me tell you IT WAS RAINING!! It was rainging in East Van, in W. Burnaby and in N. Van., (just not on that particular acre of land by the airport).
How stupid is that? I think it's retarded.
NOT ONLY THAT
but it's a fine piss-pouring rain we got here again today...'comin' down a bit sideways like'
AND it's supposed to rain all week again.
So now, most vancouverites are nice & pissy because, not only did we NOT make it into the offical record books, but we still have bloody freaking torrential amounts of rain. AND I don't want to hear the city complaining about water shortages this summer. The only reason we wouldn't have enough water ...is because we're selling it all to California.
K, enough of that rant.
Sunday , while I was out driving thru the RAIN, Eryn & I met up with Tia & JD, Stacey & Jackson, Sheelaugh & Julia... and 'went Bananas'
I didn't get to sit down or visit with them at all really, because Eryn was NON-STOP, gogogogogo She is SO athletic & agile.
After 1.5 hours, I was tired enough, so we came home.
Here's a few photo's of our visit to Bananaland
& p.s. Eryn INSISTED on wearing the 'tu-tu' and had been wearing it since first thing that morning. That wasn't me... January 14 BIG Daddy!BIG Daddy's Basic Training~~~~~~
I was so dissapointed I had forgotten my camera when BIG Daddy took us for a BIG shopping at STUPIDSTORE (I call it that for GOOD reason, mainly, because it's really stupid!, I hate it. But, admittedly, the grocery prices are the lowest around...grumble,grumble
This was our first shopping with Eryn & Aiden, Aiden being out of his infant seat and is in a permanently installed (BIG daddy installed, so it ain't goin' nowhere) rear-facing seat. This presents interesting challenges. Because in the world of parenthood and babydom..just when you get used to the way things are run (by the kids of course) then they develop, grow and change on ya again, so then you get used to a whole lotta new this and that routine, then they up and throw you off again..I'm getting better and going with the flow,...there is no 'other' choice ...really....'cept INSANITY!!!!!
The thing is, only Stupidstore around here has the grocery trollies with the double seat, so they can sit side-by-side. If I go anywhere else...I don't know how I'd do it with both babies. Lets see......hmm....If I put Aiden in the 'seat' and just put Eryn, standing in the basket, she'll stomp on all the groceries. So....something else..She can't just walk with me, or 'hang on' the trolley like older kids do. If she's not restrained in some way, I'll spend more time chasing after her and salvaging the path of destruction she wreaks, than actually shopping (as I've said countless times, she's a 'force to be wreckend with' ). Aiden is a little too heavy (just under 20lbs) to strap to my chest, no matter how much backsupport I get.
BUT !
whew, at least I got there.. BUT
I'm getting away from my story here .
We got to Stupidstore, got the trolley & the babes loaded up. Eryn was just thrilled to have Aiden right next to her, and kept her arm around him. Half way thru our 'shop' Aiden began his slouching and leaning into Eryn. It looked SO cute, I regretted not having the camera with.
I was glad BIG Daddy was with us for this first side-by-side shopping trip.
Eryn usually likes to have a good 'maul' at her brother, when we used to go shopping. He'd be safely in his infant seat, behind her, and almost out of reach, but she'd get herself turned around, and 'maul' him as best she could. Often using whatever groceries were closest at hand. So my main concern was that she'd be toooo excited having Aiden right next to her, and end up causing him bodily harm. I wouldn't get much shopping done then. hehehe
But I was fearless, cause BIG Daddy was with us. Going 'shopping' with BIG daddy is alot like 'BASIC TRAINING': "Shopping". He asked to 'lead' the shopping. I was VERY happy to oblige. I didn't get to push the trolley with our beautiful babies, for very long. I apparently kept 'falling out of rank'. And not maneuvering properly, effieciently or aggresive enough...this was a mission afterall, and I was losing focus, which meant precious seconds were ticking away, delaying completion of our mission. So, I was relegated to the 'go-for' (a.k.a. Gophur) roll. I was killin' myself laughing though, when I'd be instructed to march over and retreave the <fill in the blank> but when I'd stop and maybe look at the label, or ingredients, whatever, I got a snappy "Hurry UP' drill sargent style. I was nearly splitting my side. Mostly because BIG Daddy was BIG time serious. So understanding that, I wrangled my way into 'piloting' the trolley and had a grand time teasing the HELL outta BIG Daddy, with silly VERY "Sharon-like' tactics...(I did have the best to learn from)
Anyways. We completed the mission in satisfactory time, and rewarded ourselves with a Timmy H. Coffee.
Upon return to base. BIG Daddy was able to move the groceries in a most efficient manner (AGAIN..WHERE was that camera???) He distributed (equally, of course, he is a Libra after all) ALL the grocery bags over both forearms, and waddled his way to the door..with ALL the groceries at once..and that's ALOT considering it was well over $300 in groceries (not including all the diapers, wipes, baby food, formula, cereal etc..). BUT I expected nothing less from BIG Daddy. It is a real 'guy' thing to do though. Why make 4 trips to the car, if you could somehow manage it all in one?? Guys are ultimately lazy at heart...(You all know it..come on!)
OOPS! BIG Daddy wants to 'correct' me and explain that it's not laziness, it about efficiency (I still think it's laziness that is the heart of the motivation)
Anyways, I WILL get a photo of that sometime. I know I'll have another opportunity..because...well, like I said, men are, by nature, lazy...hehehehe
(hittin' any nerves yet? heehee)
OK
The conclusion to the story.
So, BIG Daddy grunts and flexes after 'doing the groceries' and dumps them all on the table and floor. He consider's his job done now....grunt, *burp*.
But I have groceries ALL over the kitchen now. I got BIG Daddy to come up with the great idea of taking the kids out to the park, since it was still a bit sunny. AND Sirius needed a little Vitiman D as well.
SO
Also for the first time, we loaded Aiden up in the BIG back-pack.
I knew better, by now, and had camera at hand.
BIG daddy had son on his back and daughter at his side.
They took a stroll ALLL the way around the golfcoarse nearby.
Aiden was a natural in the BIG pack on BIG Daddy's back, must be a nice perspective from up there.
I can't beleive how fast he is growing. I feel bad for him, in a way, being my last baby, and a boy..he is doomed to be a momma's boy...he already is :) (sorry Aiden...you're BIG Daddy will keep you toughend up)
I realize I'm stalling his development, trying to keep him a 'baby' longer. Not that I can really DO that, but, I enjoy every minute of it, it's just going by too fast.
OK
About the photo's
DOG: I guess Sirius (he's pretty clever) thought that if he stuck a soother in his mouth I might cuddle him too. He'll try anything for attention! I love the one with Eryn in the background, also with a soother...SEEEE where he gets it from?? He's clever!
BID D: Preppin' for the outdoors, a monkey on his back & one at his side.
SLEEPSTERS: Love sleeping baby photo's...
BIG GIRLS: More proof of BIG Daddy's BIGness..Eryn was sooo tired still...
Eryn will always dominate the playroom. Good thing Aiden is good natured. Vancouver is BEYOND damp & soggyI've lived in the 'Lower Mainland' of B.C. for more than 10yrs. now. I have witnessed some interesting weather, and climate changes....all in all, I'd would still say the weather is way more extreme where I grew up, than it is here.
HOWEVER
That was before this past month.
We have had 28 consecutive days of rain!
So, it's been raining here since ...like....12 December 2005.
So we can say that , so far, it's rained all year here!
We are about to break the 'standing' rain record, set back in the early 1950's, of consecutive days of rain.
I'm glad I didn't JUST move here, cause had that been the case, I might have changed my mind about living here and high-tailed it back to the plains.
That's fine with me though. It's ALLLlll good!
Let the rain scare away all the folks, let them move away, it's too wet, cold, dark & damp here anyways!
And in winter, most regular working folk don't even get to see the daylight.
So go ahead, return to Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia..where ever...
There are too many newbies to the city anyways, it's gettin too crowded.
Let the rain wash them all away...
So, now folks here, are HOPING it will rain MORE!
Lets BREAK the record!! ..SMASH it!
it's rained SOOO much, what's a few more days ?? , so we can make the record books!!!
Unfortunately
The sun reared it's head today, and broke thru most of the cloud cover. It MAY have still rained somewhere in the area though.
It was amazing to drive w/o the wipers on, though.
But, my EYES, my god! my EYES!!!!!
My eyes had adjusted, become more nocturnal, my twlight vision perfected, over this past month.
Now I feel like a vampire shying from sunlight...AUURRGGH!!!
Esp, as Sirius sat on my sunglasses last year (december) and broke them.
I was BLINDed today!
such a peculiar sensation, watery, teary, look outside too long and get a headache, sorta eye pain!
I wanted to thank our Dutch friends, Cindy & Arwen, for the sweet lil' xmas gifts they sent for Aiden & Eryn. Eryn actually tried to put the lil' dutch clogs on her feet (got a photo of that) I hung up their 'growh chart' and marked down their height (more photo's of that too) I think Aiden hid his lil' book somewhere.
But, you guys GOT TO send photo's more often of Eryn & Aiden's lil' dutch friend, Bente, so we can watch him grow.
Here's the most recent photo of Bente, that I have.
Plus a few shots of Eryn enjoying your gifts, Danke je wel !
tot schrijfs! En Nog gelukkige Nieuwjaar! January 11 drug induced sleepTWO nights ago I had the BEST sleep I've had in over 2years...since way before I was pregnant. I was starting to loose my 'marbles' due to sleep deprivation (amongst other things). Two babies, sharing the same room. AYE AYE AYE AYE!!! Aiden still wants to get up once or twice a night to eat, then Eryn, being woken by Aiden, decides if he gets a bottle, she wants one too. It was making me crazy.
So I talked to my Doc again, he asked me LOTS of questions about my sleep (amongst other things) then gave me these great little pills. I took one before bed the other night and was blissfully off in dreamland for 7 STRAIGHT HOURS WITHOUT WAKING ONCE!!! I even dreamed and remembered my dream...sigh...
Then the next night, we decide it's time to let the kids work it out on their own.
Aiden began crying at his usual time. When it got too frantic, Gary went to check (it's gotta be the daddy that does it, cause he always expects food from me) Eryn even woke up once too, but we let them cry it out, and cry it out they did. They finally fell asleep again, Aiden then woke near 4am, I nursed him briefly and that was it until 7:15 am. Not bad, for the 1st night of crying. Wonder how tonight will be, with the new bed and all....we'll see.
Nice thing about the lil' pills though, even if I do stir, when I hear them cry, it doesn't get to me, it doesn't get under my skin like it always used to. Let 'em cry it out....
but, point is, as I've probably 'blogged' about a million times, the power of sleep is SO often taken for granted...the effects of sleep deprivation are also taken for granted. I believe it's the lack of sleep that is a factor contibuting to my 'PPD', so sleeping 'normally' again (which to me, just means sleeping enough to dream and actually remember it.) is high on my priority list.
So, 3rd night, 3rd lil' pill, I can't wait!
nighty night............... craig's list crazeAs a morning, kinda, 'hobby' of mine, I like to browse thru Craig's list.
If you don't know of Craig's list, or never heard of it, boy are you missing out! I've turned sooo many people onto Craig's list, that have , in turn, shown their friends, who show their frineds...but Craig's list is an internet 'classic', give it a 'google'
Anyways, I always spend a few minutes browsing thru, seeing what's new.
This morning I saw the toddler bed I really wanted to get from Ikea, but couldn't afford (brand new the frame alone is $150, then you still got to buy the 3 piece matress).
I saw an ad for a used Vikare Ikea Extendable Toddler Bed, for $50, including the matress.
What a deal!! So, after devising a plan, I set out in pusuit.
After getting the bed, I knew I would still need bedding....plus this bed looks really cute with a 'rainbow' capopy cover (also from Ikea), I had to get that too, make it really special for her, so she'll LOVE her bed. So after finally arranging, and picking up the bed, over at Granville Island, I headed to Ikea. Then, once I got home again...it was such a workout, first unloading all the kids and kid paraphenalia mom's drag around with them, plus the new purchases at Ikea, then all the heavy parts to the bed, and the matresses too.
Then I still had to put the bloody thing together and rearrange babies room, and remove the old crib.
WHEW
What a job, but I did it.
Eryn was beside herself, she was SO excited! She would hardly let me make the bed up, cause she kept throwing herself onto it, saying 'my bed, my bed'
She was SOOOOoo cute! You should have seen her face when I climbed into her lil' bed and pretended to sleep!
HAHAHAHA
She DID NOT stand for that!
We'll see if she stays in her new bed all night now.
Here's a couple ikea photo's of her new bed. And a quick shot of her fast asleep in her new bed, guess it's a HIT!
The bed is so cute and cozy when both 'sides' are upright, like in the one photo.
Gotta LOVE Craig's list!
January 10 Server suicideI haven't been able to get at my e-mail in over a week now, nor does my music play on my blog site now.
I think the server killed itself
Gary says he has to rebuild our server on his laptop....lord only knows how long that will take
SO
if you need to communicate with me, try either my hotmail account
or leave a message on my blog-site
or just phone me
BUT
don't email me, cause I probably won't get it until february
In other news
We've been starting to look into daycare facilities
because I really need to get back to work at least 1 or 2 days a week
or, seriously, I will end up in a looney-bin
I have no balance in my life, it's ALLLLLL kids, very dependant babies,
I LOVE being a mommy, don't get me wrong, but going on 2 years of stay-at-home-mommy-full-time-stuff
coupled with same amount of sleep deprivation (Doc gave me new pills for that AND wowEEE are they ever FUN!)
equals one batty-momma (though the anti-psychotic meds will help deal with THAT too: weeeeeeeee hahahaha)
In further news
in 20 days it will be exactly a year since my mom died. I STILL have to go sort out the tombstone issue. OH BOY do I feel HUGE guilt when I think about that, and that I still haven't done that...yikes...
that's all the news for this hour,
tune in tomarrow for another episode
January 09 J. Duke's Birthday DukedomOur friends Andrew & Tia celebrated their son's first birthday. It was something to celebrate as J.D. had a real fight on his hands when he was born very premature. He is SUCH a character, a year later. He has these blue eyes that are wells with strong magnetic powers. He looks like such a wisend ol' soul in that rapidly growing body. What a sweetie he is.
His birthday party had a 'Knights of Yore' kinda theme, so again, Eryn's little fairy dress from Halloween came in handy. It was great seeing the whole gang of friends and all the wee-ones. A great way to spend a yucky wet, dark, January sunday in the lower-mainland of B.C.
Heeeeere's the photo's:
Happy 8 Months Aiden!!!Aiden took his first 2 steps on the day he turned 8 months old (Jan. 7th)
Gary was the lucky duck who witnessed it, I was out getting groceries.
Aiden has been creeping along the furniture for a few weeks now. He pulls himself to standing on nearly anything. So he finally is trying to step out on his own now. It's amazing because Eryn didn't START crawling until she was 8 months old, then she was walking by 10 months. We'll be curious to see when Aiden is walking successfully. It sure makes a difference having the close sibling to stimulate and motivate and learn from.
Eryn also did something phenomenal, least for me it was. I was SO excited, it was SO cute! I wanted to call my mom again, but it registers more quickly now, that I can't call her.
I can tell my lil' story here though.
I was trying to get both kidlets to nap at the same time (they've been sharing a room now for 2 weeks). My strategy was to let Eryn fall alseep first, while I was nursing Aiden in our bedroom. Then, I'd deposit Aiden in his crib when Eryn had already fallen asleep. I heard a gentle 'click' noise, like a door being pulled shut from a draft. 10 minutes later, since it's so quite and Aiden was finished nursing, I guessed Eryn was asleep.
I was VERY suprised, when I open her bedroom door (the one i heard 'click' shut) and saw that she was out of her crib and playing quietly in her room, SHE had gently, quietly shut the door.
SHE KNEW she was supposed to be in her bed.
When I opened the door, I gave her a bit of a 'cross' look and asked her what she's doing.
She looked SO sheepish, it was hilarious. Then, I saw she'd taken all her lil toys from her crib, and was lining them all up on the chair in her room. It was SO bloody cute, I couldn't help but start laughing, at which point she started giggling like a maniac!
It's amazing the things kids do that end up stealing your heart.
I guess we'll be putting her in a real bed SOON!
I figure before Valentines day.
The kids are developing SO fast, I'm curious what each day will bring. It's a real inspiration for me, it keeps me going.
January 05 18 things your body can do, that you may not know...I found this the other day while browsing thru MSN. I had to post it here. Chyla, #7 is for you. Sorry 'bout the dentist entry, I was just excercising my writing skills (not my spelling skills). Edie told me there is a new 'ozone' treatment for cavities etc.. that is 'painless' check it out.
1. If your throat tickles, scratch your ear. When you were 9, playing your armpit was a cool trick. Now, as an adult, you can still appreciate a good body-based feat, but you're more discriminating. Take that tickle in your throat; it's not worth gagging over. Here's a better way to scratch your itch: "When the nerves in the ear are stimulated, it creates a reflex in the throat that can cause a muscle spasm," says Scott Schaffer, M.D., president of an ear, nose and throat specialty center in Gibbsboro, New Jersey. "This spasm relieves the tickle." 2. Experience supersonic hearing! If you're stuck chatting up a mumbler at a cocktail party, lean in with your right ear. It's better than your left at following the rapid rhythms of speech, according to researchers at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. If, on the other hand, you're trying to identify that song playing softly in the elevator, turn your left ear toward the sound. The left ear is better at picking up music tones. 3. Overcome your most primal urge! Need to pee? No bathroom nearby? Fantasize about Jessica Simpson. Thinking about sex preoccupies your brain, so you won't feel as much discomfort, says Larry Lipshultz, M.D., chief of male reproductive medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine. For best results, try Simpson's "These Boots Are Made for Walking" video. 4. Feel no pain! German researchers have discovered that coughing during an injection can lessen the pain of the needle stick. According to Taras Usichenko, author of a study on the phenomenon, the trick causes a sudden, temporary rise in pressure in the chest and spinal canal, inhibiting the pain-conducting structures of the spinal cord. 5. Clear your stuffed nose! Forget Sudafed. An easier, quicker, and cheaper way to relieve sinus pressure is by alternately thrusting your tongue against the roof of your mouth, then pressing between your eyebrows with one finger. This causes the vomer bone, which runs through the nasal passages to the mouth, to rock back and forth, says Lisa DeStefano, D.O., an assistant professor at the Michigan State University college of osteopathic medicine. The motion loosens congestion; after 20 seconds, you'll feel your sinuses start to drain. 6. Fight fire without water! Worried those wings will repeat on you tonight? "Sleep on your left side," says Anthony A. Star-poli, M.D., a New York City gastroenterologist and assistant professor of medicine at New York Medical College. Studies have shown that patients who sleep on their left sides are less likely to suffer from acid reflux. The esophagus and stomach connect at an angle. When you sleep on your right, the stomach is higher than the esophagus, allowing food and stomach acid to slide up your throat. When you're on your left, the stomach is lower than the esophagus, so gravity's in your favor. 7. Cure your toothache without opening your mouth! Just rub ice on the back of your hand, on the V-shaped webbed area between your thumb and index finger. A Canadian study found that this technique reduces toothache pain by as much as 50 percent compared with using no ice. The nerve pathways at the base of that V stimulate an area of the brain that blocks pain signals from the face and hands. 8. Make burns disappear! When you accidentally singe your finger on the stove, clean the skin and apply light pressure with the finger pads of your unmarred hand. Ice will relieve your pain more quickly, Dr. DeStefano says, but since the natural method brings the burned skin back to a normal temperature, the skin is less likely to blister. 9. Stop the world from spinning! One too many drinks left you dizzy? Put your hand on something stable. The part of your ear responsible for balance—the cupula—floats in a fluid of the same density as blood. "As alcohol dilutes blood in the cupula, the cupula becomes less dense and rises," says Dr. Schaffer. This confuses your brain. The tactile input from a stable object gives the brain a second opinion, and you feel more in balance. Because the nerves in the hand are so sensitive, this works better than the conventional foot-on-the-floor wisdom. 10. Unstitch your side! If you're like most people, when you run, you exhale as your right foot hits the ground. This puts downward pressure on your liver (which lives on your right side), which then tugs at the diaphragm and creates a side stitch, according to The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Men. The fix: Exhale as your left foot strikes the ground. 11. Stanch blood with a single finger! Pinching your nose and leaning back is a great way to stop a nosebleed—if you don't mind choking on your own O positive. A more civil approach: Put some cotton on your upper gums—just behind that small dent below your nose—and press against it, hard. "Most bleeds come from the front of the septum, the cartilage wall that divides the nose," says Peter Desmarais, M.D., an ear, nose, and throat specialist at Entabeni Hospital, in Durban, South Africa. "Pressing here helps stop them." 12. Make your heart stand still! Trying to quell first-date jitters? Blow on your thumb. The vagus nerve, which governs heart rate, can be controlled through breathing, says Ben Abo, an emergency medical-services specialist at the University of Pittsburgh. It'll get your heart rate back to normal. 13. Thaw your brain! Too much Chipwich too fast will freeze the brains of lesser men. As for you, press your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth, covering as much as you can. "Since the nerves in the roof of your mouth get extremely cold, your body thinks your brain is freezing, too," says Abo. "In compensating, it overheats, causing an ice-cream headache." The more pressure you apply to the roof of your mouth, the faster your headache will subside. 14. Prevent near-sightedness! Poor distance vision is rarely caused by genetics, says Anne Barber, O.D., an optometrist in Tacoma, Washington. "It's usually caused by near-point stress." In other words, staring at your computer screen for too long. So flex your way to 20/20 vision. Every few hours during the day, close your eyes, tense your body, take a deep breath, and, after a few seconds, release your breath and muscles at the same time. Tightening and releasing muscles such as the biceps and glutes can trick involuntary muscles—like the eyes—into relaxing as well. 15. Wake the dead! If your hand falls asleep while you're driving or sitting in an odd position, rock your head from side to side. It'll painlessly banish your pins and needles in less than a minute, says Dr. DeStefano. A tingly hand or arm is often the result of compression in the bundle of nerves in your neck; loosening your neck muscles releases the pressure. Compressed nerves lower in the body govern the feet, so don't let your sleeping dogs lie. Stand up and walk around. 16. Impress your friends! Next time you're at a party, try this trick: Have a person hold one arm straight out to the side, palm down, and instruct him to maintain this position. Then place two fingers on his wrist and push down. He'll resist. Now have him put one foot on a surface that's a half inch higher (a few magazines) and repeat. This time his arm will cave like the French. By misaligning his hips, you've offset his spine, says Rachel Cosgrove, C.S.C.S., co-owner of Results Fitness, in Santa Clarita, California. Your brain senses that the spine is vulnerable, so it shuts down the body's ability to resist. 17. Breathe underwater! If you're dying to retrieve that quarter from the bottom of the pool, take several short breaths first—essentially, hyperventilate. When you're underwater, it's not a lack of oxygen that makes you desperate for a breath; it's the buildup of carbon dioxide, which makes your blood acidic, which signals your brain that somethin' ain't right. "When you hyperventilate, the influx of oxygen lowers blood acidity," says Jonathan Armbruster, Ph.D., an associate professor of biology at Auburn University. "This tricks your brain into thinking it has more oxygen." It'll buy you up to 10 seconds. 18. Read minds! Your own! "If you're giving a speech the next day, review it before falling asleep," says Candi Heimgartner, an instructor of biological sciences at the University of Idaho. Since most memory consolidation happens during sleep, anything you read right before bed is more likely to be encoded as long-term memory. |
